i agree with Kumail.H.T above that most of what's been identified above is easily countered, either by default features or other extensions. but (like always), i don't think the idea is entirely undo-able, probably would need a bit of getting used to though.

for the vertical sidebar, you could perhaps toggle/auto hide it? or like what's existing; the toolbar buttons for history/menu/sidemenu/bars etc.
there are addons to do so for almost every 'default' toolbar there. and the few experimental ones for sidebars.

to save horizontal space, bookmarks could be just favicons which can hover over to show titles?
well..at least it sounds not as undistracting...?^^;;or does it decrease memory too much?
sorry also if the idea is unsuitable for notebooks.

another thought: since tabs are widely used, maybe you could incorporate it also into toolbars?
a little drop down arrow context menu for adding a 'toolbar tab', and you just click once on each icon for each to show up and again to hide.
could use more than one at once, but usually people probably only need at most two at the same time.
the top, with 'toolbar tabs', address bar + menu items(i think most people hide these anyway..). and the second the usually either entirely 'toolbar button' ridden or entirely empty navigation 'toolbar..tab'.

this way, multiple tab rows can be added/configured without wasting/taking up any (much) more screen space than before...hopefully. this i know at least is doable. the above..not so much. haven't tried yet, sorry.

on that note, if you do decide to implement a vertical tab bar, could you consider also extending the usual sidebars as well?
for example increasing.decreasing the size limits when opening bookmarks that are checked to 'open in sidebar'.
or the option to relocate sidebar to left, top, bottom etc.

the only example i can think of currently is the one used in web developer toolbar, it's great to be able to see in full front what i'm doing. sidebar is a little less flexible for me..although it does tend to leave an ugly grey mark that doesn't seem to disappear even after refreshing, but that may just be me.

thank you for reading and sorry to bother you.

Then I guess they should make it preference instead of forcing it. Because the Horizontal screen space doesn't really matter if your are at a horizontal resolution of 1280 or greater, where as vertical space is very very limited, like on netbooks for example.

As for your concern about the number of tabs opened at a time, that's where the idea of having collapsible groups and workplaces comes in. Something like the superbar in Windows 7.

To be honest, It feels like a really bad idea.

First off, it would reduce the horizontal screen estate considerably.

The vertical screen estate you talk about in the picture about can easily be increased by hiding the toolbars.

ctrl + F11 for the stumble upon
ctrl + shift + b for the web developers toolbar

You can hide and unhide it as necessary.

As for the fb and bookmarks bar, they are not really needed.

You could also use small icons in your address bar to save some space.

Now the tab bar isnt much of a problem.

The main problem I have is that I usually work with around 30+ tabs running at all times, this would be hard to manage with a sidebar.

I think th current ff looks fine, a few improvements here and there are probably needed.

what I would want is auto turbo caching, for example integrated google gears to speed up apps used most often. etc.
