Sony Ericsson just announced a new Android lineup along with updates to the existing XPERIA X10 series. The announcement confirms the 3-inch XPERIA X8 for a Q3 2010 launch along with Android 2.1 updates for the XPERIA X10, X10 Mni and X10 Mini Pro.

Also announced were a couple of feature phones in the Walkman line as well as an environmentally friendly candybar device.

The XPERIA X8 would be running Android 1.6 at launch though the custom skin would feature the updated Timescape and Mediascape apps. The 3-inch capacitive touchscreen has a resolution of 320 x 480 powered by a 600MHz processor a 3.2 mega pixel camera. The phone supports 3G, Wi-Fi and A-GPS connectivity as well and would be available in a range of different colors. It is set to arrive across Europe in Q3 2010 for 259 EUR (318 USD). There is no word on when (or if) it would be getting an Android 2.1 Eclair update like the rest of the lineup.

The Android 2.1 Eclair update to the X10 lineup would mostly bring bug and performance improvements as well as a couple of enhancements to the Timescape and Mediascape apps. The XPERIA X10 however would also receive a couple of new features including HD video recording along with TV out functionality. The updates would start rolling in Q3 2010 in select markets with further enhancements coming in Q4.

Apart from all the Android love, SE also announced a couple of feature phones (read: dumb-phones) for the budget market including a Walkman series 2.6 inch touchscreen packing Yendo whose UI looks strikingly similar to their Android skin. But don’t let the looks deceive you, because it really isn’t running on Android, though it does have a faster 720MHz CPU along with a dedicated audio chip if that’s your thing. Yendo is only 2G and would be available around late August and would cost about 99 EUR (122 USD).

The third device is a simple eco-friendly candybar with 2.2 inch screen though it packs HSDPA and integrated widgets for Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. It also has a 2MP camera which can record VGA videos up to 30 fps. At 15.5mm, its considerably thick for a device which lacks so many features that are now standard today like Wi-Fi and GPS. The Cedar would be available in Q3 2010 as well, though I couldn’t get a definitive price.

Okay most of you would be wondering why I write about piracy so much? Well the answer is really complicated and I’d address the issue at some later time. But for now, lets just enjoy this song by Dan Bull – a UK based musician, file sharer and fan of Lilly Allen.

The song is actually an open letter to Lilly Allen discussing her recent streak against File Sharers and Piracy as a whole, supporting the recent Anti-piracy efforts by various organizations. Even though the theme is serious, the song is quite amusing and I thought it would be fun to ‘share’. Jump on after the break to watch the video.

Lilly Allen has been acting weird and silly and even announced to end her musical career all because of piracy. Still the industry has found out ways to counter the apparent losses, which include taking file sharers to court and suing them for massive amounts.

Anyways if you like the song, you can legally download it for free. TorrentFreak have the links and more details.

It seems like the world of P2P file sharing has come to a standstill as Swedish authorities have taken down its life source – The Pirate Bay and (surprisingly) its sworn successor – Open BitTorrent.

The Swedish court ordered TBP’s main ISP to pull the plug on the service or face fines of 500,000 SEK (about $70,600), to which they complied even though the fines were no where in the league of what The Pirate Bay had to face up till now.

The Pirate Bay still came back online after a couple of hours from a new ISP though the trackers are still down – which are causing panic among a lot of us out here. What surprises me more is why they also took down Open BitTorrent along with it, which was doing pretty good taking over Pirate Bay’s job.

According to the team, the trackers would be up by tomorrow morning, and until then you can go place an order on this “beautiful T-shirt” which they’re sending out to all those who were responsible for taking them down. Oh and you might want to try out some alternatives while they fix things.

One rather good use of the Microsoft’s Multitouch-cable Surface table would be to control you’re living room – which CRISTAL aims to achieve.

Control of Remotely Interfaced Systems using Touch-based Actions in Living spaces – or CRISTAL is a research project by the Media Interactions Lab backed by the Upper University of Austria of Applied Sciences. CRISTAL is a simple interface that allows you to take control of your digital living room by allowing a simple and intuitive touch based interface to your devices.

Like you can dim your lights by dragging on them on the coffee-table display and play movies stored in your HTPC by dragging and dropping them on the HDTV. Just watch the videos after the break to get a better idea.

Not that this isn’t Microsoft’s Surface, but still researches esitmate that it would cost about the same if put in production right now. It would be interesting if this project actually ends up as an application for Microsoft’s Surface instead. It would cut the development costs a lot, though don’t expect something like this to drop in you’re living room in the next five years.

Maybe we ought to use Project Natal to control things till then?

Anyways, here’s another video.

This time, the victim was a graduate student from Boston University, Joel Tenenbaum – who was pursuing a PhD in Physics. Though the amount was a little lower this time – $675,000.

Joel was charged for downloading and sharing of 30 songs illegally over the internet, a feat many of us easily tend to get away with. He was fined $22,500 per song. About a month ago, RIAA also managed to get Jammie Thomas-Rasset, who was fined a whooping $1.92 million for download 24 songs illegally.

And that isn’t just happening in the US now, Anti-Piracy campaigns are at full swing all over the world. From the Pirate Bay to pirate shops, nothing is being spared. So be careful before trying to download something illegally over the internet, even if its Microsoft’s Windows 7.

It makes me proud to be a member of Spread Firefox team today. Firefox has crossed the 1 billion downloads hallmark which includes every release. The browser was the first big challenge to Internet Explorer’s rein as the most dominant browser and after about 7 years of struggle has managed to gain around 30% of the market share. And to celebrate things, Mozilla has setup onebillionplusyou.com.

Photos of the first commercial motherboard to support USB 3.0 and SATA 6 GB/s speeds have been released by – you guessed it – a Chinese hardware forum. The motherboard is for Intel’s X58 platform (Core i7 for the n00bs) and supports six triple channel DDR3 memory slots, and three PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots among other features.

As the name implies, the board is aimed at the upper end of the mainstream and enthusiast market and thus would be priced around $250 for sure.

Among other things, it has eight SATA ports, ten USB 2.0 ports (six onboard), two Firewire (one onboard) and an IDE port. For expansion, the board has two legacy PCI slots and a PCI Express x1 slot. You also get dual gigabit LAN, optical and coaxial audio out along with the regular 8 channel audio.

Overall, it sounds like a good board though only hands on testing would reveal just how good it is. Head over to XFatest for more photos.

YouTube has partnered with several networks and studios, including MGM, Lionsgate, Discovery, CBS (and many more), in order to bring a wide array of titles available for streaming. The downside here is that they aren’t available outside US, though you can still use the traditional methods of bypassing that check (like HotSpot Sheild).

The new features, though not yet visible on the Homepage yet for most users, can be accessed directly via YouTube Shows and YouTube Movies. You can browse throw the listings by genres and categories. The library is filled with shows even dating back to the 70s. Though it isn’t rich in content as other sites like Hulu, mostly due to the lack of popular networks like ABC, NBC, Fox etc. Movies share the similar problems too. Though there are a few blockbuster titles like Cliffhanger and Casino Royale (the original one), absence of studios like Universal, Warner Bros and Fox would seriously limit the popularity of the service.

On the good side, YouTube has far greater number of visitors than any other video streaming service in existence, which gives it a huge edge over the competition. And they would continue to add partners down the road to broaden the selection of content available. But if they really intend to dethrone the likes of Hulu, they should negotiate with the studios to remove the country restrictions, and open their doors to a worldwide audience.

Millions of people complained in the past couple of weeks when Facebook launched a new layout for its home page. The new design broke away from the previously popular two column layout in favor of a three column version which was in ways similar to the old version of Facebook. While I love most aspects of the new design, about 94% of the users did disagreed with me. The biggest problem seemed to be the fact that the new design is pretty much confusing and cluttered with useless feeds, and this resulted in millions of complains lodged against it.

Apparently, Facebook took all the feedback into consideration and announced today that they would tweak the layout and design in the coming weeks to meet with the user requirements and expectations.

On their official blog, the Facebook design team discussed the strategy they would follow in the coming weeks. According to the article, the most demanded alterations were better control over content, an improved Highlights section and support for content filters. While I believe that we already have pretty much control over the news feeds, the ability to block and narrow down feeds should be a productive addition. The same goes for content filters, where we need more control on what apps to allow in the feeds. I personally like to see more Videos shared by my friends than anything else and I didn’t like the idea of a separate news feed that I had to click for access.

As far as highlights go, I think that section should be dropped all together and incorporated into the new real time feeds, which would new support auto updates. But the Facebook team is in favor of improving the section with more frequent and relevant updates that may make it more worthwhile. If they really want to improve the section, they should give it more space so that we can get more content.

It is currently around 260px in width while the main feeds are around 540px. If they make the main feeds around 460px, then it would be possible to have the highlights section around 340px wide making it a lot more appealing and would gain more attention.

Will these amendments be enough to satisfy the entire population of over 175 million users? My answer is no, because if there was a single common solution to everyone’s problem, the world would be a much better place.
